The Enugwu-Agidi Community in Dunukofia Council Area of Anambra State has issued a public rebuttal dissociating itself from a 34-year-old man, arrested for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl at Amanuke in Awka North Council Area of the state.
The suspect, Chukwudi Okoye, who is a seminarian, had upon interrogation, claimed that he hails from Enugwu-Agidi and various media outlets have so reported.
But in a statement on Wednesday, the traditional ruler of Enugwu-Agidi, HRH Okekeuche, the Okpalariam III, and Igwe Enugwu-Agidi, distanced his community from the suspect.
The statement which was issued by Vin Onyekwelu, the royal publicist to the traditional ruler, clarified that the suspect is not from Enugwu-Agidi but rather, from a neighboring community, NAWGU in Dunukofia LGA of the state.
“It has come to the notice of H.R.H Igwe Okekeuche, the Okpalariam III and IGwe Enugwu-Agidi na Umunri Ancestral Dynasty, of the claim by a certain man currently being accused by the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs & Social Welfare of defiling a ten (10) years old girl, that he is from Enugwu-Agidi.
“That is false.
“It is totally irresponsible of the accused to falsify the community he is from by falsely mentioning that he is from the Enugwu-Agidi community, rather than, stating the truth that he is an indigene of a neighboring community called Nawgu.
“The Traditional Ruler of Enugwu-Agidi wishes to use this communication to notify the general public, Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs, Security Agencies, and the Government of Anambra State that the person in question is from Nawgu.
“The great people of Enugwu-Agidi, hereby, distance themselves from the illegal and despicable actions of the suspect and also distance themselves from AMANUKE in AWKA L.G.A of Anambra State where the crime was committed,” the statement concluded.
