Anambra 2013: Traders stone Obi, Obiano during market campaign

Traders in Onitsha Main Market yesterday resisted the order by the State Governor to close the markets in order to welcome Mr. Willie Obiano, who is the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA’s governorship candidate in the forth-coming gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

The traders, who showed visible anger as they marched through the environment carrying placards, marred the proposed visit of the APGA candidate  yesterday. He was accompanied by Chief Martins Joe-Martins Uzodike, his Campaign Manager who also doubles as the State Commissioner for Information, Tourism & Culture.

The arrival of Governor Obi could not calm the protesting traders. Rather the governor’s entourage was pelted with sachet water bags, prompting a quick retreat to the Whitehouse office, of the Onitsha Amalgamated Traders Association (OMATA), where the donation of N1m was announced by the Governor.

Governor Peter Obi was reported as saying that political parties will not be allowed to campaign in market places- a policy sharply criticized by opposing political parties as unlawful.

However, opposition parties have described the campaign of the Governor at the market as a green light for other parties to follow suit.
