Amazon Buys MX Player Assets to Expand Presence in India

E-commerce giant, Amazon has finalized the acquisition of key assets of the popular video streaming service, MX Player, from Times Internet.
The deal, valued at under $100 million, marks a huge step for Amazon in tapping into the vast potential of smaller Indian cities and towns.
While the acquisition falls short of MX Player’s previous valuation of $500 million, it represents a calculated investment by Amazon to harness the platform’s widespread popularity among diverse demographic groups across India.
While not acquiring the entire company, Amazon will integrate certain assets of MX Player, with several top executives expected to transition to roles within Amazon’s expanding ecosystem.
This move reflects Amazon’s commitment to leveraging local expertise and market knowledge to drive growth in the Indian market.
MX Player, originally from South Korea, captured the Indian audience with its innovative video playback features.
Under the stewardship of Times Internet, MX Player evolved into a comprehensive video streaming platform offering a mix of licensed and original content.
The platform further diversified its offerings by launching MX TakaTak, a short-video app, in response to the ban on TikTok in India.
In the competitive landscape of Indian video streaming, dominated by players like Reliance and Disney, MX Player holds a position alongside Netflix and Prime Video.
