Amad Diallo Fires Ivory Coast to Africa’s First Victory at 2026 World Cup

Ivory Coast became the first African nation to record a victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ecuador 1-0 in a dramatic Group E encounter decided by a late Amad Diallo strike.

The News Chronicle reports that before the Manchester United winger made a late game-winning play the African champions seemed doomed to settle for a goalless draw in Philadelphia. Introduced in the second half, Diallo tied a low cross in the 90th minute to give the Elephants a valuable victory and set off celebration among Ivorian fans.

Ivory Coast’s first World Cup win since their 2014 event victory over Japan helps them to be firmly positioned to compete for a historic berth in the knockout rounds.

One of the best defensive records from South American qualifying, Ecuador started the tournament with one of the strongest records and had a number of opportunities and twice hit the crossbar in the first half through John Yeboah and Alan Minda. Ivory Coast almost closed after Elye Wahi hit the crossbar.

Thousands of passionate spectators and notable guests including music entrepreneur Jay Z watched the game as both sides fought fiercely for control. But Ivory Coast gave the last blow when Wilfried Singo rushed forward to set up Diallo for the winning goal.

While Ecuador will seek a response against tournament debutants Curacao, the Elephants now turn their focus to a vital match against Germany.
