Alleged under performance by Obiano: Group blames weak opposition

As Anambra State continues to dwindle in core development indices, a human rights and pro-democracy group,  Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation (HURIDE), has urged Governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano to wake up from slumber in providing democracy dividends to the people.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of HURIDE, Dede Uzor A Uzor, in a statement made available to newsmen in Onitsha, the commercial nerve center of the State said the rainy season is about to set in and roads across the State are still in deplorable condition.

“The people of the State are in agony for electing Obiano as Governor. He has not tarred up to 250km of roads in the state and this is his seventh year in office. Supporters of this government should organize a project tour for journalists and human rights groups as former Governor of the State, Peter Obi did, if they disagree with our position. Such a tour would prove the abysmal performance of Obiano,” he said.

Dede Uzor said it is pathetic that even the roads scraped before last year’s Christmas have been abandoned.

“We call for an immediate declaration of State of emergency on Anambra roads especially PortHacourt Road, Niger Street, Ziks Avenue, Bida Road, Modebe, Arondizuogu, Orlu, Creek, Niger-Main Market, Vein Road, Okwe Street, Oguta Road, Oduwanu Street to Fegge Police Station, Miss Elems, Obodo-Ukwu now cut into two, Ede Road now a death trap among others.  What happened to the dualisation of 33 Road, Construction of Akpaka Forest Road to College, Nsugbe College Road, Ugwu nwasike Road, all in Onitsha and environs among many others?” he queried.

Wondering how he would convince people of State to vote for his party or candidate in the 2021 Governorship election, the group blamed the opposition for not rising up to their responsibility.

“It is unfortunate that the opposition is dead in the State. Some have been bought over, while some are waiting to be put in power to continue the cycle of endemic corruption going on in the State”

According to the statement, “In major cities of the state such as Onitsha and Awka, borehole and River Niger water, which are acidic and disease-infested and have led to various sicknesses and outright death of some people, are major sources of water supply to the people. It is no longer news that Onitsha still remains the dirtiest city in Nigeria.”
