Akwa United fumes on Players and Coaching staff following a poor start to the season

The management of Akwa United has tendered its disapproval of the poor performance of players and coaching staff since the start of the NPFL 2023/24 season.

The Promise Keepers who no longer keep promises were held to a barren draw by Shooting Stars at the Eket Stadium. The Uyo based club in all of its four games has lost three and drawn one – a development the management of the club has frowned at absolutely.

Yesterday a meeting was held reviewing the clubs’ performance, the Chairman of the Club, Elder Paul Bassey, revealed that the current performance is below par and not acceptable. He further disclosed that the management of the club has ensured all players and coaching staff are paid and, on this note, there will be no room for loopholes.

“We are a club rich in tradition and endowed with winning mentality. We don’t participate in the league for participation’s sake. We compete to win laurels and qualify for the continent, and our record in the past five seasons can attest to that.

“We the management of Akwa United Football Club are worried about the present position of our club after playing four matches without a win. Our recent results are simply not acceptable. Our fans and supporters deserve the best from us for all their support and encouragement, and we have to improve our performance to ensure we have positive results in our subsequent matches.

“As the management of this club, we have made our player’s welfare package a top priority, we are not owing any staff of this club because salaries and bonuses are paid as at when due. As a club, we don’t lack anything because the government of Pastor Umo Eno has provided us with all the necessary support we need.

“Our players don’t have any reason not to perform well, they must stand up and be counted, they have to be more committed, dedicated, disciplined, and focused while representing this club. Our players and coaches must always be at their best, so they can give us the results we need to achieve our target at the end of the season, which is to win the league again, just as we did in 2021”.

Akwa United won their first-ever title in 2020/21 under the guidance of coach Kennedy Boboye. Ayeni was appointed as Boboye’s successor but unfortunately was let go last season after a poor run.

Osho Fatai was appointed this season to replace Deji, but the team still struggles to return to their best.
