The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to strengthen its commitment to integrity, accountability, and improved performance in its mandate to ensure road safety.
Akume made the call on Wednesday while addressing senior officers during the FRSC’s 2025 Half Year Strategy Session held in Abuja. He was represented by Sanusi Danjuma, the new Permanent Secretary in the Office of General Services.
He described the session as an important opportunity for the corps to assess its performance, identify strengths and weaknesses, and plan strategically to reduce road accidents and improve safety on Nigerian roads.
“This session is essential for evaluating how far you’ve come and where improvement is needed,” Akume said. “Given that land transport is the main means of moving people and goods in Nigeria, the FRSC bears a significant responsibility to keep our roads safe.”
Despite challenges, Akume praised the FRSC for its achievements. He highlighted Nigeria’s recent recognition in regional and continental road safety efforts, including hosting the Permanent Secretariat of the Africa Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies and leading the West African Road Safety Organisation.
“Nigeria was also named the best in Road Safety Management in Africa. These are major accomplishments worthy of recognition,” he added.
He acknowledged financial constraints but applauded the FRSC for adopting technology to boost its operations. He cited the development of the FRSC Mobile App and the National Crash Information System as innovative tools that have improved real-time traffic monitoring and data-driven planning.
“These efforts reflect the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises safety and security for all citizens,” Akume noted.
He assured the FRSC of the federal government’s continued support in achieving its goal of zero road crash deaths. He also encouraged officers to stay focused on the theme of the session: “Driving Change from Within: Reinforcing Integrity, Accountability and Performance.”
“This theme aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting a culture of responsibility in all sectors. I urge you to take charge, make informed decisions, and work toward achieving FRSC’s goals,” he concluded.
Akume also commended the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and all FRSC personnel for their hard work and dedication, urging them to maintain their commitment to making Nigeria’s roads safer.
