AFCON Semifinal Exit: Chelle Explains Penalty Choices After Morocco Defeat

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his decisions during Nigeria’s dramatic semifinal loss to Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, insisting that Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi were among the team’s most reliable penalty takers.

Nigeria were eliminated 4–2 on penalties after a goalless draw through regulation time and extra time.

Chelle explained that extensive penalty sessions were held throughout the tournament and the players selected were those with the strongest records in training. He added that Victor Osimhen was withdrawn late in the game due to an ankle injury that limited his movement.

The News Chronicle observed that the coaching crew anticipated a shootout as the match progressed and made late substitutions to improve Nigeria’s chances from the spot. Paul Onuachu, who replaced Osimhen, justified the decision by calmly converting Nigeria’s opening penalty.

However, Chukwueze missed a key opportunity to put the Super Eagles ahead after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved Morocco’s first attempt. Onyemaechi also failed to convert, while Morocco went on to score their remaining kicks, with Youssef En Nesyri sealing victory.

Despite the disappointment, BUA Group chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu praised the team’s effort and confirmed he would still honour his 500,000 dollar pledge to players and officials.

Morocco now face Senegal in Sunday’s final after the Teranga Lions defeated Egypt earlier in the day. Nigeria will meet Egypt in the third place playoff, with Osimhen’s fitness still uncertain.
