AFCON Host nation, Côte d’Ivoire, sack manager Jean-Louis Gasset

The Ivorian Football Federation has discontinued their partnership with the first team head coach Jean-Louis Gasset regardless of AFCON qualification possibility.

Ivory Coast finished third place in Group A after picking three points from the available 9 – winning one and losing two games to Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria who progressed to the next round with seven points respectively.

A statement from the Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) on social media asserted that head coach Gasset, and his assistant Ghislain Printant’s contract have been terminated due to bad results.

“The Federation Ivoirienne de Football expresses its regrets for the performance of the Elephants during the group phase of the CAN (AFCON) 2023,” the FIF statement said.

“However, it remains convinced of the potential of our football team, and calls for the unity of all for the upcoming events.”

The Federation further revealed that another assistant manager will take charge of the interim manager pending on when Gasset’s successor is found.

Ivory Coast could still make it to the knock-out as one of the four best third place teams which will depend on the outcome of other games.

Ivory Coast will face Group B winners Cape Verde or the winner of Group C in the round of 16 should they proceed.
