AFCON 2023: Osimhen declared unfit to travel with the team

Super Eagles talisman Victor Osimhen has been declared not fit to travel with the team to Boukare due to abdominal discomfort the Napoli striker is experiencing.

“Members of the team traveled from Abidjan to Bouaké today via a 10pm Air Côte d’Ivoire flight. Osimhen did not, however, make the trip as a result of abdominal discomfort.”

According to the Super Eagles, one of the team’s medical Doctors has been asked to stay with the player while his progress is monitored. He will join the team when he’s declared fit.

“Team medics confirmed that he has been placed under close watch, with a member of the medical team staying behind in Abidjan with him. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5pm.”

In the Super Eagle’s quest for their fourth title, having won the prestigious title in 1980, 1994 and 2013 being the most recent, they will compete against the Bafana Bafana of South in the Semi finals round in Boukare at exactly 5pm (Nigerian time).

For precautionary measures, Jose Peseiro subbed off Osimhen (who had been stretched out at the course of the game) in the extra time of 90+5 minutes to bring on Paul Onuachu.

His brilliant strike against Angola in the 75th minute was removed via the VAR. Nigeria’s six goals in the tournament have been scored by Osimhen, Troost Ekong, Ademola Lookman and by Guinea-Bissau’s defender Opa Sangante (own goal).
