It followed the consideration and adoption of a report by the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, chaired by Mr Kefas Calvin (APC-Toungo).

Calvin commended Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri for sponsoring the bill, describing the amendment as a significant step towards improving the welfare of traditional rulers.

He said the proposed law would provide the legal framework for the payment of gratuity and death benefits to Emirs and Chiefs.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr Muhammed Jidjiwa, also commended the committee for its work and urged members to adopt the report.

Jidjiwa described traditional institutions as important custodians of the culture, norms and values of the people, adding that the amendment would strengthen the welfare and dignity of traditional rulers.

The Majority Leader, Mrs Kate Mamuno, moved the motion for the passage of the bill, which was seconded by Mr Musa Kallamu (APC-Mayo-Belwa).
