Abia Receives Healthcare Boost as Foundation Deploys Trained Liaison Officers

—

Quantus Medical Foundation, through its flagship WeCare Nigeria Initiative, has commenced the training and deployment of Patient Liaison Officers (PLOs) to selected pilot hospitals in Abia State as part of efforts to drive healthcare transformation.

The officers were deployed to Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia; General Hospital, Aba; and Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, following a training session held on Thursday in Umuahia.

The program is being implemented in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Health under the Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative (AHCRI).

Dr Nnenna Ihekoromadu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation and Lead of WeCare Nigeria, stated that the PLO model is designed to strengthen emergency response systems, improve patient experience, and enhance accountability in hospital operations.

She explained that the initiative aims to streamline patient flow, improve communication between patients and healthcare providers, promote compassionate care, and ensure real-time escalation of operational challenges.

Ihekoromadu described the PLO’s role as a critical operational component of a week-long program that integrates leadership engagement, Basic Life Support (BLS) training, and reinforcement of compassionate care practices.

“The goal is to ensure that challenges are identified early and addressed promptly,” she said.

She further disclosed that the US-based, Nigeria-focused foundation had already conducted BLS training on Wednesday in Umuahia for approximately 60 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and other clinical staff from across the state.

She noted that the week-long engagement represents a coordinated effort to strengthen healthcare delivery in Abia.

According to the Abia-born physician, both WeCare Nigeria and AHCRI are focused on strengthening the culture of care within hospitals.

“When leadership, systems, and frontline teams are aligned, patients receive safer, more compassionate, and more timely care—especially in emergency situations,”

“Our focus is to ensure that healthcare delivery in Nigeria operates at an optimal level. We are committed to redefining the system by driving meaningful cultural change across hospitals in Abia,” she added.

In her remarks, the Chief Medical Director of ABSUTH, Prof. Ijeoma Nduka, described the project as laudable, noting that it has the potential to significantly improve the quality of care not only in Abia State but across Nigeria.

“We wholeheartedly embrace this initiative because we believe it is sustainable. We are grateful to Dr Ihekoromadu for bringing it to her home state, Abia,”

“It is about cultural transformation. We are learning, and we will continue to learn from this initiative,” she added.
