Ex CJN, Onnoghen Banned from Holding Public Office for 10years

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has been banned from holding public office for the next 10 years.

The ban came after The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) found him guilty of false declaration of assets in breach of the provisions of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) for public officials.

The judgment which was delivered today in Abuja was chaired by Danladi Umar. He offered Onnoghen an opportunity to plead for mercy in which the defendant said, “no comment”.

Reading the judgment, Umar said, “The defendant is hereby removed from office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Chairman of the National Judicial Council and the Chairman of the Federal Judicial Service Commission. “The defendant is hereby banned from holding public office for 10 years.”

Onnoghen is to forfeit the money in his five bank domiciliary accounts that were not declared to the Nigerian Government because they were acquired illegally and there is no evidence as to how he acquired the money.
