Former Manchester United star Carlos Tevez has opened up about how angry he was at Gary Neville after he made his controversial move to Manchester City in 2009. He admitted he wanted to ‘fight’ him.
“I think Gary Neville said a lot of things when I left. It made it worse,” Tevez said in an interview on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
Ferdinand recalled how Tevez reacted whenever he faced Neville, saying the Argentine wanted to kill the former United captain.
Tevez agreed, explaining that Neville had accused him of disrespecting manager Sir Alex Ferguson without understanding the circumstances surrounding his exit.
The News Chronicle reports that Tevez believed Ferguson had failed to honour an agreement to sign him permanently after his two year loan spell at Old Trafford. He also claimed the manager began leaving him on the bench instead of resolving the situation.
However, Neville had previously criticised Tevez for moving to United’s biggest local rivals. It was seen as a lack of loyalty to the club, especially as they were building a side capable of competing in major competitions.
Despite this, Tevez quickly became an integral part of the squad, scoring 3 goals in the 2 leg League Cup semi final against United in his first season.
After having a public fall out with manager Roberto Mancini, Tevez returned to the team and helped them win the Premier League title in 2012. This was a huge change in the football landscape of Manchester.
