Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted that the club has lost its way following their disappointing performance against Como, but insists he remains the right man to lead the team back to its former standards.
In remarks shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Facebook, Carrick addressed United supporters before taking questions, acknowledging that the team’s display against the Italian side fell below the expectations associated with the club.
“The game against Como was bad. This is not acceptable for Manchester United. We have lost our way a bit, to be honest,” Carrick said.
Despite the setback, the Englishman expressed confidence in his ability to turn things around, firmly backing himself to guide the Red Devils back to the level they demonstrated during the opening five months of his tenure.
“But we will be back. Am I the right man? 100%, I am sure,” he declared.
Carrick also stressed that Manchester United’s identity must remain bigger than any individual, pointing to legendary former managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby as examples of the standards, resilience and commitment the club must preserve.
“This club will always be bigger than any individuals, me or the players. Sir Alex Ferguson the greatest of all time for me so his priority was Manchester United,” he stated.
He added that the resilience associated with Busby’s era must not be lost, pledging to ensure that the team retains the values that have historically defined the club.
“Sir Matt Busby and the resilience they showed was beyond belief. You can’t lose that and I won’t let us lose it, for sure,” Carrick said.
The United boss further dismissed suggestions of divisions within the dressing room, insisting that a return to consistent performances would require humility, discipline and hard work from everyone involved.
“I am confident we will be back. We’ll get back to the level we show in the first 5 months. It comes down to being humble and hard-working every day — the dressing room is not divided,” he added.
Carrick concluded by taking responsibility for protecting his players from external pressure, making it clear that he was prepared to shoulder the burden as United work towards a revival.
“I will hold that umbrella for me to get wet, everyone stays dry. I am ready, I am confident, otherwise I wasn’t here.”
