Five men have been charged before the Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State following a violent mob attack on police officers during an operation in the Ota axis of the state.
The suspects identified as Morenikeji Badmus (36), Adedoja Segun (40), Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride (49), Mike Stephen (28), and David Odeh (32) were arraigned on charges including conspiracy, serious assault on police personnel, obstruction of lawful duty, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
According to a press statement released on October 7, 2026, by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the incident occurred on October 2 around The Bells area in Iyana-Iyesi, Ota.
Trouble began when a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect carrying a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. While the officers were transporting the handcuffed suspect to the station, an armed group ambushed the team, attacking officers with cutlasses, stones, and glass bottles. The assault resulted in injuries to police personnel, extensive damage to their operational vehicle, and the temporary escape of the handcuffed suspect.
In response, the Ogun State Police Command launched intelligence-led operations that led to the swift track-down and arrest of the five suspects, while active efforts remain ongoing to track down other fleeing accomplices involved in the ambush.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, emphasized that the Command will strictly prioritize the safety and protection of officers executing their lawful duties. He cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands or launching physical attacks on security operatives, advising that any grievances be reported through official legal and administrative channels.
