Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on the reasons for his dramatic rift with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, saying he had considered quitting the international scene after the 2026 World Cup before the Portuguese Football Federation convinced him to continue.
In a long interview, Ronaldo said he had written a goodbye speech to the Portuguese people before the federation’s president asked him to change his mind.
The News Chronicle reports that Ronaldo also revealed he personally supported the appointment of Jesus and was initially pleased when the coach was unveiled.
According to the Portugal captain, Jesus later told him he was central to his plans and promised that he would play Portugal’s opening and final matches during the international window.

However, Ronaldo said the relationship took a sharp turn in Norway.
He claimed Jesus asked him at lunchtime if he could play 30 minutes despite having been told earlier that he would not feature in the match because of his physical management plan.
Ronaldo agreed, warmed up from half-time and waited to be introduced, only to remain on the bench.
“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said.
The revelation adds a fresh twist to the growing tension surrounding Ronaldo’s final chapter with Portugal.
