Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.
Amaechi made the declaration on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today monitored by The News Chronicle, while challenging the Tinubu administration over the rising cost of living and transportation fares.
He said he would personally visit a filling station to verify the petrol price, daring anyone who doubted his claim to accompany him with a camera.
“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel. If fuel has come down to ₦600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” Amaechi said.
He added: “If you doubt me, come with your camera. I will go to the filling station and buy fuel.”
Amaechi further pledged that if the price reaches ₦600 per litre, he would relinquish his position as Atiku’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“If it comes down to ₦600, I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as the vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.
The former Minister of Transportation also questioned whether Nigerians had seen a reduction in transportation costs, recalling Tinubu’s earlier commitment to lowering the cost of transport.
“Has any price come down, has anything changed?” Amaechi asked.
His comments came amid his criticism of the Federal Government’s economic policies, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy, which he argued had increased hardship for Nigerians.
