FG Installs 707,765 Meters As 4.8m Electricity Customers Remain Unmetered

—

The Federal Government installed 707,765 electricity meters in Nigeria in the first half of 2026, but more than 4.8 million domestic and industrial users remained unmetered as of June.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), 357,495 meters were installed in the first quarter, and another 350,270 meters were put on during the second quarter.

The number of meters installed is higher by 71 per cent than the 412,792 meters recorded in the same period last year.

However, only 7.74 million of the 12.59 million active registered electricity customers as of June 2026 were metered, indicating a 61.51 per cent national metering coverage.

The News Chronicle reports that the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme accounted for the largest share of second quarter installations, with 205,486 meters deployed under the initiative.

The government is also expanding its World Bank backed metering programme as part of efforts to improve billing transparency and reduce estimated billing.

Meanwhile, NERC said monthly energy caps remain in place for unmetered customers in states yet to transition, limiting the amount they can be billed while the metering exercise continues.
