Nigerian DJ and philanthropist Florence Otedola, known as DJ Cuppy, reacted with surprise after her godfather, Aliko Dangote, answered with composure to an Al Jazeera journalist who questioned his need for a public share offering.
Cuppy left a short comment under a clip of the exchange posted on Pulse Nigeria’s Instagram page, where the clip was shared. She wrote simply, “‘Yourself.’ Lord have mercy [lol].”
The moment was from an interview on Al Jazeera’s Talk to Al Jazeera program, where the presenter asked Dangote why he needed to raise funds through an initial public offering when he could finance the project himself. The journalist put it directly: he called Dangote the richest Black man in the world and asked why he could not simply use his own money instead.
Dangote used the moment to explain his reasoning rather than take offense. He said the goal of the offering, launched on September 14, 2026, was to let ordinary Nigerians own a stake in the business. He told the journalist the plan was for people like his driver and his cook, and then added the interviewer himself, to have a share in the company’s success. That final detail, aiming the comment squarely at the journalist, is what caught Cuppy’s attention and prompted her reaction.
The Dangote Refinery IPO is seeking about ₦2.15 trillion to expand production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. Shares are priced at ₦525 each, with a minimum purchase of 10 shares, bringing the smallest possible investment to ₦5,250. The offer closes on October 13, 2026.

Cuppy has often publicly acknowledged her close relationship with Dangote, whom she regularly refers to as her godfather.
The IPO has already attracted attention beyond the Al Jazeera interview. Afrobeats star Davido questioned Dangote on the same subject during a public appearance in New York, and the two later appeared together in Times Square, where a Nasdaq billboard displayed a message promoting the offering.
