France captain Kylian Mbappe has said he hopes to dedicate the Ballon d’Or to Africa if he wins the prestigious individual award next month.
The Real Madrid forward, who has Cameroonian and Algerian roots, said his African heritage remains an important part of his identity despite being born and raised in France.
Mbappe made the remarks in an interview with RFI, stressing that he had never severed ties with his African roots.
“I’ve always had an upbringing steeped in African culture, even though I was born in France and did everything in France,” he said.
“I have never cut ties with my roots, my origins. It’s part of the values instilled in you.”
Mbappe visited Cameroon in July 2023, travelling to Yaounde, Douala and Djebale, the island where his father’s family originates from. During the visit, he also visited schools supported by his foundation and met with Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute.
Reflecting on his connection with the continent, Mbappe said he had always received a warm reception during his visits to Africa.
“I went back to Cameroon not long ago. I used to go there when I was little, I had an amazing time. Every time I go to Africa, I’m always welcomed so warmly, I feel the love from people,” he said.
Despite his African heritage, Mbappe said he had always been clear about representing France at international level.
“I was born in France, I am French, I did everything in France. I have Cameroonian and Algerian origins, but I grew up with French culture,” he said.

Mbappe is among the nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be announced at a ceremony in London on October 26.
A victory would see him join a list of players of African origin who have won the award, including George Weah, Karim Benzema and Ousmane Dembele.
Thanking Africans for their support, Mbappe said he hoped to win the award and dedicate it to the continent.
“I thank them for everything and I hope to leave with the Ballon d’Or, and in one way or another, dedicate it to them,” he said.
