The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is advancing a national digital platform designed to provide farmers, livestock keepers, and agricultural advisers with reliable, location-specific weather and climate information.
Developed in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Crea2Solutions, the NiMet Data Hub has progressed from the initial design stage to an advanced Minimum Viable Product (MVP), with live weather and climate services currently undergoing testing.
Project development commenced in February 2026 under the Climate Services for Youth (CS4Y) and AGRA programmes, rapidly advancing to a testable stage by July 2026.
The initiative aims to bridge critical gaps by improving access to historical, monitored, and forecast climate data, thereby empowering stakeholders to conduct better risk analysis, seasonal planning, and climate-informed decision-making.
Stakeholders and project partners note that the hub directly addresses long-standing challenges in agricultural climate services, including fragmented data, poor coordination among service providers, and the difficulty of translating technical forecasts into practical and timely advice.
Collaborative stakeholder engagements co-hosted by NiMet and ILRI have focused on mapping Nigeria’s agro-meteorological data landscape, addressing delivery bottlenecks, strengthening institutional linkages, optimising last-mile communication, and ensuring gender and social inclusion.
Designed to serve a wide range of users, including smallholder farmers, pastoralists, extension workers, researchers, government institutions, and private advisory providers, the platform integrates core NiMet resources such as online map rooms and agricultural climate products.

This integration will facilitate the generation of context-specific agro-weather advisories, while ILRI contributes its expertise in organising research data and developing digital tools to make climate information more actionable for decision-makers.
Ultimately, the initiative aligns with the food security, climate-smart agriculture, and digital service pillars of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
By placing actionable climate data directly in the hands of agricultural producers and field advisers, the NiMet Data Hub seeks to improve national preparedness, reduce climate-related agricultural losses, and support resilient livelihoods across Nigeria’s agri-food sector.
