Nigeria’s Falconets were heartbroken after losing to Colombia in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in a 1-0 victory and ended their chances in reaching the semi-finals.
The News Chronicle reports that Nigeria took control of the tie against Colombia in the quarterfinal at Stadion ŁKS in Lodz, until Kafayat Mafisere was sent off for a severe foul in the 76th minute.
The red card played a pivotal role as Colombia made good on their advantage and went in search of a winning goal.
Nigeria defended furiously during most of the remaining time, but the pressure soon bore fruit after stoppage time.
Valerin Loboa broke clear of the onrushing defenders and saw her first effort blocked by the advancing goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, before collecting the second chance to score.
The Falconets immediately threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Colombia held firm to make it to the last four.
The defeat ends Nigeria’s hopes of another semifinal appearance at the tournament, while Colombia will now face either defending champions North Korea or Canada for a place in the final.
