INEC Records Low Voter Turnout in Kano By-Election

Low voter turnout was recorded on Saturday during the by-election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State.

Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the exercise, reported adequate security arrangements at all the polling units visited.

Six political parties — the Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Peoples Party (APP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) — fielded candidates for the election.

NAN reports that INEC officials arrived at most of the polling units before 8 a.m., while election materials were also deployed on time.

The exercise proceeded smoothly across the polling units visited, with voters conducting themselves peacefully.

Some of the polling units monitored included 021, 022 and 03 in Dawaki Ward, as well as 037, 020 and 017 in Kofar Yamma Ward.

Some voters who spoke with NAN expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election and commended INEC for what they described as a seamless exercise.

One of the voters, Mustapha Abdullahi, described the by-election as one of the most peaceful elections conducted in the area in recent times.

Abdullahi commended INEC for the arrangements put in place and the conduct of its officials.

He, however, attributed the low turnout to the nature of the election, noting that state constituency by-elections typically attract fewer voters.

Similarly, another voter, Aisha Hamisu, said she participated in the election to vote for her preferred candidate.

She expressed hope that her candidate would emerge victorious and fulfil the promises made to the electorate.
