The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has said former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has nothing to hide regarding the state’s financial records during his tenure.
Tanko challenged critics questioning Obi’s financial record to verify the documents and handover records made available by the former governor instead of making unsubstantiated claims.
He made the remarks on Friday during an interview on Arise TV, monitored by The News Chronicle, while responding to the ongoing controversy over loans, debts, and other financial obligations allegedly linked to successive administrations in Anambra State.
According to Tanko, Obi voluntarily made the financial records of his administration available to the public and would be willing to clarify any issue concerning the state’s finances.
“Nobody asked His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, to present facts about his handing over. He did willingly and openly to the people,” he said.
The controversy centres on the financial position of Anambra State when Obi handed over power to his successor, former Governor Willie Obiano.
While supporters of Obi have maintained that he left the state in a strong financial position, critics have raised questions over loans and other liabilities allegedly associated with his administration.
Tanko, however, dismissed suggestions that Obi’s financial records had not been properly accounted for, insisting that documents relating to the former governor’s tenure were available for verification.
He specifically referred to Obi’s handover report, which he said provided details of the state’s financial position at the end of his administration.
Tanko urged those challenging the figures to examine the records and verify the information rather than relying on allegations.
“The video is there. Anybody can see it. They confirmed that such amount of money is in their bank account. If anybody wants to contradict that, let them go to the bank. It is available,” he said.
Tanko’s comments come amid renewed scrutiny of the financial records of previous administrations in Anambra as political actors debate the state’s debts, loans and other financial obligations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
