UNIPORT ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries, Alleged Violations

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the Federal Government-ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.

The branch Chairman, Prof. Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the industrial action was also triggered by alleged violations and illegalities within the university.

Ngwoke said the union had held several meetings with the university management and exercised patience while awaiting the payment of outstanding salaries in line with directives from the Federal Government.

He, however, said the continued non-payment of the salaries had become unacceptable, leaving the union with no option but to commence an indefinite strike.

“What we are being owed is far greater than what we receive; we just have to resolute the revolution of Congress, so we have activated indefinite local strike in the University of Port Harcourt,” he said.

The ASUU chairman also lamented the financial hardship faced by members, saying some lecturers had allegedly lost their lives as a result of the prolonged non-payment of salaries.

He said the union would not suspend the strike until the university management addressed its demands and complied with relevant Federal Government orders and directives.

The development comes amid wider concerns over the implementation of agreements between the Federal Government and university unions, particularly issues relating to salaries and working conditions.
