The Nasarawa State branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has declared an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of its demands by the state government and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The union announced the strike in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Ogbere Zachariah, on Wednesday in Lafia.
JUSUN accused the authorities of resorting to delay tactics rather than addressing its demands, saying that all efforts to resolve the issues amicably had failed.
The union’s demands include immediate implementation of the 40 percent Peculiar Allowance approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, financial autonomy for the judiciary, a 58.1 percent salary increase, as well as pending conversions and outstanding promotions.
It also demanded the implementation of the approved 40-year service and 65-year retirement age for judicial workers, similar to the arrangement for magistrates and other judges in the state.
“We are therefore left with no option but to withdraw our services indefinitely until our demands are met,” Zachariah said.
He directed judiciary workers across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to stay away from work and ensure total compliance with the strike until further notice.
The declaration came a day after the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), sitting in Abuja, issued an interim order restraining the Nasarawa JUSUN branch from embarking on its planned strike.
The order followed an ex parte application filed by the Nasarawa State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaac Danladi.
The application was filed after JUSUN issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government, threatening to shut down judicial activities if its demands were not addressed.

The court directed that the interim restraining order would remain in force pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
The development leaves the union’s strike declaration in direct conflict with the subsisting interim court order.
