The Borno State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against crime, recovering 41 mobile phones and large quantities of suspected illicit drugs valued at about N6.5 million.
The Command, led by Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid, said the recoveries were made by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), also known as the Crack Squad, during intelligence-led operations in Maiduguri.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, two suspects were arrested on August 30 at the Baga Road Motor Park area of Maiduguri.
The suspects were allegedly intercepted while attempting to transport illicit substances to Baga Local Government Area. Police recovered 48 sachets of suspected Tramadol and four blocks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, with an estimated value of N550,000.
In another operation conducted on June 18, police operatives raided an abandoned building in the Ngaranam area of Maiduguri following credible intelligence.
Although no suspect was found at the scene, the officers recovered 124 blocks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, valued at approximately N6 million. Police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the suspect linked to the abandoned consignment.
The Command also disclosed the recovery of 41 mobile phones following a complaint over two missing devices, a Samsung phone and an iPhone.
Investigations reportedly led police to the residence of one Baba Isa Yerima in the Kwanan Yobe area of Maiduguri, where a search resulted in the recovery of 39 additional mobile phones.
The total value of the recovered phones was estimated at approximately N25 million.
Police said the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary investigation to stealing the phones from different locations. He remains in custody while efforts are ongoing to arrest other alleged accomplices.
The Command said all the cases remain under investigation, after which the suspects will be charged to court.
The police urged members of the public who believe their phones may be among those recovered to approach the Borno State Police Command with valid proof of ownership.
The Command also called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police or other security agencies.
It reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive investigations, sustained patrols and community collaboration to improve security across Borno State.
