Two suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have surrendered to Nigerian Army troops in Monguno, Borno State, handing over two AK-47 rifles and other items.
The suspects, identified as Jidda Modu, 20, and Kaka Kawu, 21, reportedly surrendered at about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday September 2 to troops of Headquarters Sector 3 at Charlie 4 in Monguno town.
Sources said the two men surrendered two AK-47 rifles, eight rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and two magazines.
Other items recovered from them included five mobile phones of different brands, a pair of earbuds, a power bank, a Zenith Bank ATM card, a memory card, a USB cable, two head warmers and a bag.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects were among a group of about 10 ISWAP fighters who allegedly left a camp at Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering to the authorities.
The suspects and the recovered items have since been taken into custody at Headquarters Sector 3 for further interrogation and processing.
The latest surrender comes amid ongoing counter-insurgency operations by troops of Operation Hadin Kai aimed at dismantling terrorist networks in the North-East and encouraging insurgents to lay down their arms and renounce violence.
