FIFA Supports Nigeria’s Football Reform as NFF Overhaul Gains Momentum

Nigeria’s football reform agenda has been given a fillip, as FIFA has approved the proposed roadmap.

The meeting, which was held in Zurich, attracted FIFA, CAF, the National Sports Commission, and Nigeria Football Federation officials, who discussed recent developments in the NFF and the way forward.

The News Chronicle reports that the meeting was called after the resignation of the NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and other members of the executive committee.

The NSC chairman, Shehu Dikko, stated that they would continue consultations with FIFA and CAF, as stakeholders in the Nigerian game strived to agree on a more equitable and inclusive football model. The reform agenda, which was proposed by the NSC, would also impact governance, administration, and elections at local, state, and federal levels.

FIFA’s involvement is significant as concerns over the management of Nigerian football have intensified in recent months. The reform process could determine how the country’s football administration operates going forward.

On the other hand, the NFF has refuted a report that FIFA had sent a warning letter to the NSC over government interference.

A senior FIFA official confirmed that the letter was not sent. However, the spotlight is now on the proposed restructuring and the conditions for the next NFF elections.
