The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into alleged inciting comments credited to the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, over a reported threat to flog residents who refuse to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a joint briefing by security spokespersons.
Iniedu said the Borno commissioner is being investigated alongside the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Danjuma Shekwolo, and Senator Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East, over separate alleged inciting statements linked to the electoral process.
According to him, Buba came under police investigation after a video and comments attributed to him surfaced online, allegedly threatening to flog residents who refuse to support the APC in the 2027 elections.
“I was part of the team that questioned the distinguished Senator in Osun State. The law is very clear when it comes to inciting. It is criminal to incite members of the public, especially as you comment on the electoral process,” Iniedu said.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would not shy away from its responsibility of maintaining law and order, regardless of the personalities involved.
The police spokesman said all the controversial and allegedly inciting statements were currently under investigation and that the outcome would be made public.
He also cautioned political stakeholders against making statements that could incite members of the public or threaten peace and security ahead of the 2027 general election.
Meanwhile, the Force confirmed that 154 persons arrested during the August 16 Osun State governorship election are still undergoing investigation.
The police appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant evidence, noting that the reluctance of witnesses to testify in court remains a major obstacle to successful prosecution.
