Taraba Bans Animal Rearing in Residential Areas, Sets N50,000 Fine for Violators

The Taraba State Government has banned the rearing of cows and other animals within residential communities and across Jalingo, the state capital, as part of efforts to curb environmental nuisance, protect public health and restore cleanliness and orderliness.
The government warned that residents who violate the ban risk a fine of N50,000.
Chairman of the Taraba State Environmental Sanitation Agency (TSESA), Mr Iliya Kefas, disclosed this during the state’s environmental sanitation exercise in Jalingo.
Kefas said the prohibition was backed by existing environmental laws enacted by the Taraba State House of Assembly and approved by the executive.
According to him, the regulation is aimed at promoting a cleaner, greener and more orderly environment across the state capital.
He specifically warned residents against keeping cows and other animals within residential communities, urging animal owners to provide suitable accommodation for their animals outside designated residential areas.
“This is in our law. It was approved by the House of Assembly and accepted by the Executive Council. Rearing cows inside the community is wrong and prohibited,” Kefas said.
“We want a new Taraba, a new phase of Taraba, a greener Taraba. From now to four years, we want Taraba to be changed. But how can we move forward when people are rearing animals inside the town?”
The TSESA chairman further stated that the state’s environmental laws provide sanctions for violators, including a N50,000 penalty for anyone found rearing animals within designated urban and residential areas.
The government said the enforcement of the ban would form part of its broader efforts to improve environmental sanitation and create a cleaner and healthier Jalingo.
