Tinubu Directs Major Reform of Nigeria’s Football Administration

President Bola Tinubu has directed that Nigeria’s football system be restructured due to a wave of disappointments in recent performances and inability to qualify for big tournaments.

The President said that the reforms should tackle a raft of challenges including governance and administration, development and academies, competitions and accountability.

Tinubu said that while Nigeria boasts of great potential and public support for football, there are underlying structural challenges that need to be addressed.

The News Chronicle reports that the President said the National Sports Commission should collaborate with the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders to implement a comprehensive reform plan, while at the same time ensuring that sporting activities are not interrupted.

The reforms will involve consultations with stakeholders both within and outside the country, as well as engagements with FIFA and CAF to ensure that the proposals align with global football guidelines.

Tinubu also pointed to progress recorded in other sports following the restructuring of the National Sports Commission, saying football should receive similar attention.

The President called for greater transparency, accountability and stronger institutions, stressing that Nigeria’s football administration must match the country’s enormous talent and following.

The reforms are expected to reshape the management and development of Nigerian football, create a stronger pathway for players, and improve the country’s chances on the international stage.
