The architecture of power in post-colonial Nigeria has long treated personal biography not as a fixed historical record etched in the archives of truth, but as a plastic art, a malleable text edited, rewritten, and drastically revised to fit the shifting exigencies of every electoral season. When a national leader’s foundational identity undergoes metamorphic shifts across decades,transforming elite public institutions into ghost campuses, shifting the geography of basic learning across continents, and rendering formal primary education an exercise in domestic abstraction,the crisis ceases to be a mere political controversy. It metastasizes into an epistemological collapse, an elaborate institutional theater where the entire apparatus of the state forces its citizenry to unsee what they know, unread what is archived, and normalize the absurd.
To trace this trajectory from the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999 through the labyrinthine legal gymnastics of subsequent election cycles down to the current horizon is to observe a recurring mathematical decimal of evasion that refuses to terminate. In the initial fragile years of the current democratic dispensation, the documentation presented to the electoral commission pointed toward recognizable, verifiable landmarks. Government College Ibadan, Loyola Children’s School, and the University of Chicago. These were concrete, assertive claims anchored in specific spaces, physical brick and mortar, and recognizable eras meant to satisfy the basic statutory demands of public office.
Yet, the moment legal cross-examinations and investigative journalism began to probe the structural integrity of these claims ahead of the 2003 cycle, the biographical landscape suffered a sudden, violent structural collapse.
Institutions vanished overnight and were quietly replaced with alternative origins. Government College Ibadan conveniently yielded to Government College Lagos, while Loyola Children’s School vanished to make way for St. John’s School, despite historical records and spatial archives proving conclusively that certain facilities had not even been constructed during the claimed windows of attendance. Concurrently, the University of Chicago transmuted seamlessly into Chicago State University, trailed by anomalous administrative records bearing inexplicable female gender designations that defied basic verification.
This desperate strategy of fluid, shape-shifting identity reached a dizzying, Orwellian crescendo by the 2023 electoral cycle. Here, previous decades of robust formal schooling were casually and unapologetically jettisoned in favor of an untested, highly convenient narrative of home tutoring entirely devoid of conventional certificates. This fiction was aggressively complemented by frantic, multi-layered legal deployments in foreign courts designed to block the sunlight of public verification and shield academic files from the prying eyes of the populace. Now, looking toward the 2027 horizon, the pattern mutates once more in broad daylight. Primary and secondary certifications are omitted entirely from the filings, while a newly introduced Chicago State certificate makes a dramatic appearance bearing visual, typographic, and structural discrepancies from the exact version paraded just four years prior.
This persistent gymnastics brings us to the core anatomy of perjury and public accountability. Lying under oath is a grave indictable felony that carries no statute of limitations in any jurisdiction genuinely tethered to the rule of law. When a citizen signs statutory declarations under the solemn penalty of perjury, every single line of that curriculum vitae is an inviolable legal covenant with the public trust. The questions that follow are as inescapable as they are damning. Did successive electoral filings contain deliberate, calculated falsehoods across 1999, 2003, and 2023? Can administrative clearance by captured, compromised, or overwhelmed electoral umpires retroactively sanitize structural fraud of this magnitude? And why does the nation’s legal architecture consistently construct insurmountable procedural blockades against private citizens and public-interest litigants seeking to interrogate assumed credentials?
Behind these legalistic inquiries lies the most haunting philosophical paradox of the entire saga: Who, precisely, was the physical entity who walked the halls of Government College Ibadan and Government College Lagos in earlier epochs, only for subsequent official declarations to retroactively erase those formative years into a total vacuum of conventional schooling?
In any society governed by reason and institutional memory, a curriculum vitae is not a living document subject to infinite revisions based on political convenience or judicial technicalities. It is a fixed anchor of public trust. When credentials morph from cycle to cycle like shifting desert sand dunes, the state ceases to be an instrument of democratic governance and becomes an active accomplice to an elaborate, multi-decade fraud. Until the courts and the national conscience muster the raw institutional courage to arrest this recurring decimal, the Nigerian democratic experiment will remain permanently captive to the ghost of credentials past, proving beyond doubt that in the theater of power, the most dangerous subversion of a republic is the state-sanctioned institutionalization of an official lie.
