Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have ambushed a Nigerian military convoy along the Yamtake-Bitta axis of Borno State, killing at least four soldiers and injuring several others.
The attack, which occurred last week, reportedly involved small arms and an improvised explosive device (IED). At least three military vehicles were destroyed during the assault, while the terrorists allegedly captured another vehicle containing weapons and ammunition.
According to African jihadism expert Brant Philip, who reported the incident on his official X handle on Thursday, the attack was carried out with precision, leaving the troops with significant casualties and equipment losses. Graphic images purportedly showing the dead soldiers have also circulated online.
The incident came shortly after troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled an ISWAP attack on a Forward Operating Base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area, on August 10. Several terrorists were reportedly killed during the confrontation, while some soldiers sustained injuries.
The latest ambush has renewed concerns over the continued ability of insurgents to launch deadly attacks against military formations and convoys in Borno State, despite sustained counter-insurgency operations.
The Yamtake-Bitta corridor has witnessed repeated attacks over the years as Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to exploit the difficult terrain of the North-East. The increasing use of IEDs against military convoys remains a major concern because of the casualties and damage to operational equipment.
The attack is also part of a wider pattern of violence recorded in Borno in recent weeks. Earlier in August, ISWAP fighters reportedly attacked a military base in Buni Gari, killing 11 soldiers.
While the Nigerian military continues to conduct ground and air operations against insurgents, the latest incident highlights the challenges confronting efforts to completely dismantle terrorist networks in the North-East.
As investigations continue, the deaths of the four soldiers have once again drawn attention to the heavy human cost of Nigeria’s prolonged fight against insurgency.
