The biological son of late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau, is reportedly emerging within the ranks of the insurgent group, raising concerns over a possible continuation of his father’s ideology and networks.
Sources familiar with developments within the insurgency reportedly indicate that Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau is gaining prominence among Boko Haram fighters, although details about his exact role and influence remain unclear.
His reported emergence comes years after the death of his father, Abubakar Shekau, who became one of the most notorious figures in Nigeria’s insurgency.
Shekau assumed leadership of Boko Haram following the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and presided over some of the deadliest years of the insurgency. Under his leadership, the group carried out attacks against communities, security personnel, government institutions and civilians across Nigeria’s North-East and neighbouring countries.
Shekau was also widely known for releasing propaganda videos in which he issued threats against governments and claimed responsibility for attacks carried out by his faction.
He was killed in 2021 following a confrontation with fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Sambisa Forest. His death marked a major shift in the dynamics of the insurgency, particularly around the Lake Chad Basin.
The reported emergence of his son within Boko Haram could potentially introduce a new dimension to the ongoing insurgency, particularly if he succeeds in attracting loyalists associated with his father’s former network.
However, the claim about Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau’s reported rise within the group has not been independently verified, and further intelligence is required to establish his current position, influence and activities.
