Stand With the Suffering Masses – Obi Urges Church to Confront Bad Governance

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Methodist Church of Nigeria to remain unwavering in speaking truth to power, defending the oppressed, and championing justice and good governance amid the nation’s mounting challenges.

Obi made the call after joining Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Methodist faithful from across Nigeria and beyond at the opening of the 50th/15th Biennial Conference of the Methodist Church of Nigeria in Ibadan.

In a statement made available to The News Chronicle, Obi expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the Methodist Church through the years and said the gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s enormous potential despite its current difficulties.

He urged the Church to continue standing with ordinary Nigerians and to remain a strong moral voice in the country’s pursuit of a just and prosperous society.

“I encourage the Church and its delegates to remain steadfast in speaking truth to power, standing with the suffering masses, and continuing to advocate for justice, good governance, and a better Nigeria for all, especially in these challenging times. The Church remains one of our nation’s strongest voices of hope, conscience, and moral leadership,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also appealed to the Church to keep Nigeria in its prayers, particularly by asking God to inspire political leaders to govern selflessly and deploy public resources for the benefit of the people.

“I urge them always to pray that God Almighty would touch the hearts of politicians and leaders, so that they will always think and use public resources for the public good,” he added.

Obi thanked the Methodist Church for the invitation and wished delegates a fruitful and successful conference.
