The National Population Commission (NPC) has launched a digital birth and death registration system in Kano State aimed at improving the efficiency, security and accessibility of civil registration services.
The National Commissioner representing Kano State, Dr Aminu Ibrahim-Tsanyawa, inaugurated the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) System on Wednesday at Unguwar Uku Primary Healthcare Centre in Kano.
Ibrahim-Tsanyawa said the initiative would replace the manual paper-based registration process with a secure, real-time electronic platform, ensuring that birth and death records are captured digitally, stored safely and made easily accessible.
According to him, the new system is designed to improve data quality, minimise errors, reduce delays and enhance service delivery across the country.
“The rollout of the Digital e-CRVS System demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the National Population Commission to ensuring that every birth and death occurring in Nigeria is registered promptly, accurately and efficiently,” he said.
“The system replaces the conventional paper-based registration process with a secure, efficient and real-time electronic platform.
“Through this innovation, birth and death records can now be captured digitally, stored securely and accessed more efficiently, thereby improving data quality, reducing delays, minimising errors and enhancing service delivery to Nigerians,” he added.
The commissioner said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Tinubu and supports Nigeria’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16.9, which seeks to provide legal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible child, especially those under the age of five, is registered.
Ibrahim-Tsanyawa described birth registration as more than a legal obligation, saying it is a fundamental human right and the first official recognition of a child’s existence.
He reminded parents and guardians that birth registration remains free for children under five years and warned them against patronising illegal registration centres that issue fake birth certificates.
The commissioner also appealed to media organisations to intensify public awareness campaigns on the importance of timely birth and death registration.
He said the commission was working closely with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), relevant ministries, traditional and religious leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to expand awareness of the digital registration system at the grassroots.
Ibrahim-Tsanyawa commended the Chairman of the NPC, Dr Aminu Yusuf, for repositioning the commission as a technology-driven institution.
He also acknowledged the support of development partners, including UNICEF, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and other stakeholders, for their contributions to the successful implementation of the Digital Birth Registration programme.
