The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the installation of 200 solar-powered street lights at Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State as part of efforts to improve security and enhance the learning environment within the institution.
The Director of Community and Rural Development at the NDDC, Mr Mathias Ikpefua, disclosed this on Monday during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the commission to the management of the Polytechnic.
Ikpefua said the project forms part of the commission’s broader intervention to strengthen infrastructure and improve safety across educational institutions and host communities.
According to him, the initiative involves the installation of 245 solar-powered street lights, with 200 units allocated to Auchi Polytechnic and the remaining 45 units designated for the neighbouring Igbei community.
“This project is part of a larger NDDC intervention involving the installation of 245 solar-powered street lights.
“With 200 units designated for Auchi Polytechnic and the remaining 45 units for the Igbei community, the project is expected to enhance night-time visibility and improve security within the Polytechnic environment upon completion,” he said.
Ikpefua urged the institution’s management to sustain its partnership with the commission to attract more developmental projects and critical infrastructure to the Polytechnic.
Also speaking, the representative of the contracting firm, Tosamila Global Resources Ltd., Mr Jonathan Ibrahim, assured the management that installation work would begin immediately.
He said the project would be completed within schedule to ensure that staff, students and other members of the Polytechnic community benefit from improved lighting and security.
Responding on behalf of the institution, the Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr Edith Oyati, commended the NDDC for the intervention, describing it as a major contribution to the development of the Polytechnic.
Oyati, however, urged the contractor to execute the project strictly in line with the approved specifications and complete the work within the agreed timeframe.
