A Nigerian police officer has sparked outrage after he was caught on video allegedly attempting to extort a motorist and making an ethnic remark during a routine vehicle document inspection.
In the viral footage, the officer is seen checking the motorist’s vehicle documents and driver’s licence. After inspecting the papers, he returns the vehicle documents but allegedly refuses to hand back the driver’s licence.
When the motorist asks why his licence is being withheld, the officer allegedly makes a gesture indicating he wants money before telling the driver, “If you were Igbo or someone else, I would have detained you.”
The motorist maintains that all his documents are valid and complete. The officer, however, claims the driver failed to produce a waybill for the goods he was transporting, despite the motorist insisting that the items had already been cleared and the required customs duties paid.
The video has since gone viral, triggering widespread condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians accusing the officer of attempted extortion, abuse of power and making an ethnically charged remark. Many have called on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the incident and hold the officer accountable.
