Ogun Assembly Clears Oluomo, Says Embezzlement Allegation Lacked Evidence

The Ogun House of Assembly has cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of an embezzlement allegation linked to his removal from office in 2024.

The lawmakers also resolved to convert Oluomo’s impeachment into a resignation during Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The decision followed the presentation of the Committee of the Whole House report by Deputy Speaker Lateefat Ajayi.

The report stemmed from a motion Oluomo submitted to the Assembly on March 31,Lawmaker seeking a review of the circumstances surrounding his removal.

Ajayi moved the motion for the adoption of the committee’s report, while Yusuf Amosun seconded it. The House unanimously approved the motion through a voice vote.

In its resolution, the Assembly held that the embezzlement allegation did not form part of the notice of removal served on Oluomo. It further ruled that the claim could not be substantiated based on the evidence before the House.

The lawmakers also considered Oluomo’s request for either exoneration or the presentation of evidence to support the allegation, citing Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees the right to fair hearing.

According to the committee’s report, members reviewed all available evidence before deciding to withdraw the embezzlement allegation. The House consequently ruled that the allegation would no longer be listed among the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.

The Assembly also overturned Oluomo’s impeachment and formally commuted it to a resignation, saying the decision was taken to promote camaraderie, unity and harmony among members.
