2027: Opposition Has No Chance Against Tinubu — Jega Explains Why

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Daily Trust editor, Malam Mahmud Jega, has warned that Nigeria’s fractured opposition stands little chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu unless it unites behind a single candidate.

Speaking on the podcast Conversations with Prof. Jideofor Adibe, the veteran journalist alleged that the Tinubu administration is pursuing a political strategy designed to prevent the emergence of any formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Jega said the opposition’s greatest obstacle is its deep internal divisions and the inability of key political figures to put aside personal ambitions in favour of a common presidential candidate.

The opposition parties are so divided. It’s almost impossible for fragmented opposition parties to defeat the incumbent administration,” he said.

He also argued that while liberal democracy remains one of the most effective systems of governance, it was originally developed for more advanced societies, adding that countries with weaker institutions often struggle to make the system work effectively.
