Egypt Allege Unfair Officiating After Painful World Cup Exit to Argentina

—

Egypt has voiced strong frustration following their dramatic World Cup elimination, accusing match officials of making controversial decisions during their 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina.

The News Chronicle reports that the Pharaohs took a two-goal lead before Argentina staged an amazing late comeback and were in total control. After VAR disallowed Mostafa Zico’s attempt for a foul earlier in the move, Egypt thought they were denied a vital second goal.

The team also asked for a penalty on Mohammed Salah minutes before Argentina scored the game-winning goal in extra time.

Following the game, head coach Hossam Hassan questioned the officiating, saying his team was treated unfairly and that important calls went in favor of the current champions. His remarks have fueled rising discussion over VAR usage throughout the event.

The loss dashed Egypt’s dream of making the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. As Argentina moved on, Egypt’s exit leaves Morocco as the only African country still in the tournament, and focus turns to their pivotal last-eight match against France.
