The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to modernising its operations through increased investment in technology, intelligence and advanced combat equipment to effectively tackle the country’s evolving security threats.
Oluyede made the declaration on Monday during the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) and the African Land Forces Forum held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He said the dynamic nature of contemporary security challenges demands a highly trained and technologically equipped military capable of responding effectively to modern warfare.
According to the Army Chief, the Nigerian Army has continued to review and strengthen its operational strategies by upgrading its capabilities and deepening collaboration with other security agencies.
He explained that sustained military offensives, enhanced intelligence gathering and the deployment of modern military assets have significantly improved the Army’s operations against insurgency, terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality.
Oluyede noted that intelligence and technology now play a central role in military operations, allowing troops to detect threats more accurately, respond more rapidly and execute missions with greater precision.
He said the Army would continue to procure and deploy sophisticated combat platforms and other force multipliers to improve operational effectiveness while ensuring the safety of its personnel.
The COAS added that the Army’s ongoing modernisation programme also prioritises training officers and soldiers to operate advanced military platforms and adapt to emerging security threats.
He disclosed that recently acquired military equipment would be fully integrated into counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and other internal security operations across the country.
Highlighting the importance of intelligence-led operations, Oluyede said the increasing complexity of terrorism and organised crime makes timely intelligence, inter-agency cooperation and the use of emerging technologies indispensable.
He further stated that the Nigerian Army would continue to strengthen collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and improve the coordination of joint operations.
The Army Chief emphasised that innovation, intelligence and rapid decision-making have become defining features of modern warfare, stressing that technological advancement must be matched with professionalism, discipline and strict adherence to ethical standards.
He also appealed to Nigerians to support the military by providing credible and timely information to security agencies, noting that public cooperation remains vital to ongoing efforts to address insecurity across the country.
