World Cup: Haaland Brace Sends Norway Past Brazil into Quarter-finals

Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 on Sunday to book a historic place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and eliminate the five-time champions.

Brazil controlled much of the first half and had an opportunity to take the lead before the break when they were awarded a penalty after a foul inside Norway’s penalty area.

However, Bruno Guimarães squandered the chance, sending his spot-kick wide as the teams went into halftime locked at 0-0.

Norway grew into the game after the restart, with Martin Ødegaard orchestrating play in midfield and Antonio Nusa causing constant problems for Brazil’s defence with his pace and direct running.

The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Nusa delivered a pinpoint cross for Haaland, who powered a header beyond goalkeeper Alisson.

Brazil pressed for an equaliser, but Norway defended resolutely while continuing to threaten on the counterattack through Haaland’s strength and pace.

Haaland wrapped up the victory in the 89th minute after capitalising on defensive hesitation before calmly slotting the ball past Alisson for his second goal of the night.

Brazil pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty following a late foul, but there was not enough time to mount a comeback.

The victory sends Norway into the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face England following the Three Lions’ 3-2 victory over hosts Mexico.

Haaland’s brace also boosted his challenge for the tournament’s Golden Boot, capping another outstanding display by the Norway captain.

For Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, the defeat ended their bid for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.
