Senegal Star Pape Gueye Hints at International Exit After Painful World Cup Elimination

—

Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has sparked fresh controversy after suggesting he could step away from international football following the country’s dramatic exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Soon after Senegal lost a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium in a tragic Round of 32 match, the Villarreal midfielder made the remark on social media.

Expressing his displeasure following the early elimination of the team, Gueye stated he would stop representing Senegal as long as the present coaching staff is in charge, The News Chronicle reports.

Though Belgium mounted a late comeback via Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans before sealing the victory with a penalty late in extra time, first-half goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr seemed to be driving Senegal to triumph.

Head coach Pape Thiaw stood by his substitutions, claiming they were made because many players were fatigued rather than for strategic considerations.

Gueye’s remarks have increased attention on the coaching staff, therefore compounding already existing tensions around the national team and causing new concerns regarding its future following yet another subpar conclusion to a major event.
