Indonesia to Build 39 Airports to Boost Nationwide Connectivity

Indonesia is preparing to build 39 new airports across the country as part of efforts to strengthen air connectivity and improve access to remote communities, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Director-General of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Transportation, Lukman Laisa, said the expansion would enhance the country’s aviation network and support economic development across the archipelago.

According to him, the additional airports will increase Indonesia’s planned aviation network to 296 hubs, up from the 257 airports currently in operation nationwide.

Laisa said the planned airports would be developed with a strong emphasis on safety, the adoption of advanced technologies and resilience to the impacts of climate change.

He noted that the expansion is expected to improve connectivity between regions, particularly underserved and remote areas, while supporting the country’s long-term transportation and infrastructure goals.
