Mbappe and Haaland Set for Blockbuster World Cup Battle as Group I Top Spot Beckons

—

Two of world football’s most prolific forwards, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, are set to headline one of the biggest matches of the FIFA World Cup group stage as France and Norway battle for first place in Group I.

Though Friday’s game will decide who finishes atop the group, The News Chronicle reports that both countries have already qualified for the knockout stages.

Mbappe comes into the game in great form after tallying 42 goals for Real Madrid in the 2025–2026 season. Having scored 16 goals in the tournament already, the France captain is also near to Lionel Messi’s World Cup mark.

Meanwhile, Haaland is looking for his own place in history by trying to score in his third World Cup match in a row, with 38 goals for Manchester City.

Beyond the star players, both teams feature excellent attacking depth, therefore setting up an intriguing match.

Although qualification is already confirmed, winning could give a more advantageous path through the knockout stages and motivate both France and Norway to go all out for maximum points.
