World Cup Shake-Up: South Africa Edge Korea, Mexico Run Riot to Secure Next-Round Berths

South Africa and Mexico booked their places in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after securing crucial victories in their final Group A fixtures.

South Africa edged South Korea 1-0 in a fiercely contested encounter, while Mexico produced a clinical display to thrash Czechia 3-0 and finish as group leaders.

The South Africans delivered a disciplined performance to claim all three points and seal qualification to the knockout stage.

After a tense first half that ended without a goal, South Africa returned from the break with renewed purpose and greater attacking urgency.

Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko capitalised on a defensive error to fire home the decisive goal after South Korea failed to clear the danger.

South Korea responded by introducing more attacking options in a desperate bid to rescue the match, but South Africa’s resolute defence held firm to secure a famous victory and confirm their progression to the Round of 32.

“It was a difficult game, but we showed character and believed until the end,” South Africa’s players reflected.

In the group’s other decisive fixture, Mexico underlined their title ambitions with a dominant 3-0 victory over Czechia to cement top spot in Group A.

The hosts controlled proceedings for long periods but had to wait until the 54th minute for the breakthrough as Mateo Chávez netted his maiden international goal.

Julián Quiñones doubled Mexico’s advantage seven minutes later after taking full advantage of another defensive lapse by Czechia.

Mexico added a third goal to complete an emphatic victory, extending their unbeaten run and confirming their status as Group A winners.

The defeat ended Czechia’s hopes of advancing, while South Korea also bowed out of the tournament following South Africa’s victory.

With the final Group A standings settled, Mexico advanced as group winners and South Africa progressed as runners-up, ensuring both nations will feature in the Round of 32 as the competition moves into its knockout phase.
