A businesswoman, Elizabeth Patrick, has approached the Upper Area Court, Masaka, Nasarawa State, seeking dissolution of her marriage over alleged threats to her life by her husband.
Patrick, a mother of four, filed the divorce petition against her husband, Abdullateef Anafi, a mechanical engineer, alleging repeated misunderstandings and acts of intimidation during their marriage.
In her claims before the court, Patrick said she had been separated from her husband for over a year due to unresolved issues in their relationship.
She alleged that her husband had disrespected her parents and threatened her with a machete on two occasions.
“He threatened me with a machete twice. I live in constant fear,” Patrick told the court.
She further alleged that she was injured with the machete on May 18 and reported the incident to the Masaka Police Station.
Anafi, while responding to the petition, accepted the divorce under Islamic law and told the court he had no further objections.
He also agreed to the petitioner’s request for custody of their children.
The judge, Salisu Mohammed, subsequently granted the divorce in line with Islamic law and practice and directed Patrick to observe the three-month waiting period (Iddah).
The court adjourned the matter until July 13 for hearing on the custody application.
